The numbers agree: Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have done it again! Disney’s The Lone Ranger won the box office crown this weekend, raking in $29.4 million to edge out last week’s top film, Monsters University, which pulled in a paltry $19 million.
To celebrate the July 4th weekend, Americans went out in droves to see their country battered and destroyed by enemies. Monsters University was trailed by four such patriotic films: World War Z ($18.2 million), White House Down ($13.5 million), Man of Steel ($11.4 million) and Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain ($10.1 million).
The weekend’s biggest flop was Iron Man 3, which pulled in a pathetic $503 thousand. It’s the biggest sign yet that America’s love affair with Tony Stark is over.
Long live Tonto.
