The Death of New Releases

The numbers agree: new movies simply can’t win at the box office these days.

Over the weekend, not one new release cracked the top ten. The highest ranking movie was something called Anomalisa, which made $140,000 and finished in 27th place. Why so low? The cowards at Paramount only opened it on FOUR screens.

But that’s the new standard in this post-Force Awakens world. Paramount, though, must feel foolish this morning. Anomalisa averaged $35,000 per screen. Had it played on the 4,134 screens that The Force Awakens is showing on, it would have made $144 million this weekend. That amount would have beaten Star Wars by more than $50 million.

Turns out that we here in Hollywood (Pa.) know a bit more about this business than most. If anyone needs our help, just pick up the phone and open that checkbook.
